Stretch goal unlocked! Character Spotlight: Mysterious Masked Wrestler | King
over 5 years ago – Mon, Jul 30, 2018 at 09:45:20 PM

Howdy Sainome Enthusiasts!

We’re back with good news and a new Character Spotlight entry! For starters, we’ve unlocked our second stretch goal, which means all Kickstarter backers will now receive an alternate art version of the Sainome Card “Treasure Search” with their order! This also means that we’re just a little bit away from our final stretch goal, which is a new hero! We’ve got less than a week to go, so to ensure we hit that last goal, let’s keep telling people about Sainome and its campaign! We can do this!

Today we’re also bringing to you another installment in our Character Spotlight series. The character chosen for today’s entry comes at the request of one of Sainome’s backers. For those who may be tuning in for the first time, let us explain how this Spotlight feature works.

Each fighter in Sainome Colosseum R comes with their own short backstory as well as their own unique abilities and attacks. Moreover, each character has a Normal Form and a heightened Awakened Form. The latter form is an ultra-powerful version of the character that they can transform into once certain conditions have been met; this form allows them to utilize a brand new set of powers to really lay down the hurt on their opponents.

In this update, we’re revealing the abilities of an ultra-powerful character: the Mysterious Masked Wrestler (Normal Form) and the King (Awakened Form). Below you’ll see both Forms' abilities.

Normal Form (on the left) | Awakened Form (on the right)
Normal Form (on the left) | Awakened Form (on the right)

A single look at the skills of the Masked Wrestler/King reveals that this dude's sole mission in life is to wreck people. Some on the LionWing team consider him to be the strongest Hero in the game, which is actually the goal we were looking to accomplish when designing him. Seeing as he's a promo character, we wanted him to feel really special; to that end, we worked with the Japanese team—who ultimately were the ones who designed his abilities—to create a super-powerful fighter that simply annihilated the competition. While he may not be permitted in official tournament play because of how destructive he is (though, if you're running a tourney and want to allow players to field him, by all means, have at it!), he's an absolute blast to play. He's pretty much always dealing damage, even upon missed attacks—and when he's not the one dishing out the hurt, he's mitigating any incoming, thanks to his skill Dramatic Comeback. I mean, the guy doesn't even have to switch back to his Normal Form once he's awakened, for crying out loud!

He does have a weakness, however: he can't get into his Awakened Form quickly. As such, because he has to nearly be KO'd to transform, a good strategy is to get him down to 4 or 5 HP and then unleash a huge barrage on your next turn so that you knock him out before he gets a chance to awaken. Also, making really good use of your Sainome Cards can be a key to victory as well; cards like Substitution Jutsu, Shadow Bind, and Wooden Buckler (in addition, of course, to any Sainome Card that boosts your own damage) are all great ways to counter the Masked Wrestler/King.

And that'll do it for this update, folks! As always, a big thanks to everyone who's supported the project thus far! We're in the homestretch, folks, so let's knock out this last stretch goal!

Until next time, Sainomers!

A look at the Sugoroku variant rules!
over 5 years ago – Sat, Jul 28, 2018 at 10:02:32 PM

Hello everyone!

Before we get to today's topic, we wanted to touch base real quick on the campaign's progress. As you can see, we're fast approaching our second stretch goal, which is mega exciting! With still two-ish weeks to go, we have plenty of time to meet not only the upcoming stretch goal but those beyond it as well! So let's keep the ball rolling!

Now, onto today's topic: the Sugoroku variant rules! So a lot of folks have expressed interest in how these rules work and what comes packaged with the game. Thus, we thought we'd post an update addressing that very subject!

The brief rules posted below come directly from the game's rulebook. However, we're showing off the full Sugoroku Sheet (which comes included in the game) that details exactly how the rules work. We have not shown off this sheet anywhere on the campaign, so this is a sort of "rules premier," if you will. Remember, though, that the Sugoroku rules are variant rules, not the standard rules. They are not meant for competitive play and are merely a fun, alternate way of determining players' HP totals. Of course, if you love this way of establishing HP, don't let us tell you how to enjoy the game; use them for any occasion and as often as you'd like.

Here are the condensed Sugoroku rules as outlined in the rulebook:

Instead of using cards as HP, you may use the enclosed Sugoroku Sheet and Character Chips to denote HP totals instead. When using the Sugoroku Sheet, your character’s starting HP will be between 5 and 15 HP, depending on the order in which players finish the race or the tiles they land on. The player awarded the least amount of HP from this, will take the first turn in the colosseum match.

And here is the Sugoroku Sheet that comes packaged with the game, which outlines all of the rules:

Sugoroku Sheet (back side)
Sugoroku Sheet (front side)
Sugoroku Sheet (front side)

And those are the Sugoroku rules! As always, if you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to reach out. A lot of you have messaged us already either here or on Facebook and have said the kindest things about Sainome, which warms our hearts. We have really loved running this campaign primarily because of our interactions with you all, the game's community. To that end, feel free to drop by our Discord any time (link here) where we chat about all things Sainome, anime, video games, and of course, tabletop games!

Talk to you all soon, Sainomers!

Best,

A week to go! Character Spotlight: Broke Magus | Magus, Magic Unleashed
over 5 years ago – Thu, Jul 26, 2018 at 01:33:50 AM

Hiya everybody!

Sainome Colosseum R has just one week left in its campaign! It's kind of wild to think we've been on this ride for almost a month now! We're super excited about bringing Sainome to you all and are overjoyed with the campaign's success thus far. We've still got a few stretch goals to unlock, so let's work toward those and try to get that new hero!

Today, though, we're back with another installment in our Character Spotlight series where we take a look at the core characters of Sainome Colosseum R! For those who may have missed the previous Spotlight updates, allow us to catch you up to speed.

Today we’re revealing the abilities of the game's quintessential magic user: the Broke Magus (Normal Form) and the Magus, Magic Unleashed (Awakened Form).

Below you’ll see both Forms' abilities.

Normal Form (on the left) | Awakened Form (on the right)
Normal Form (on the left) | Awakened Form (on the right)

The highlight of the magus character lies in his discard abilities, and in particular his not needing to discard anything to use powerful Magic-type Sainome Cards, like the rest of the characters. What this means is that, while your opponents are having to get rid of cards to unleash powerful Magic attacks, you'll be holding on to yours, giving you greater control over how you play your hand. Because all of the magus's attack abilities revolve around the discard mechanic, though, the character, in turn, requires a lot of hand management—and good hand management at that. Thus, we consider him to be a high-difficulty Hero.

That being said, when used effectively, the magus is a proper beast of a Hero, especially when deploying Elixir of Magicks, which can wreck people. However, he does have a downside: that beast-ness can only happen under the right conditions and only if you've played your cards well up to that point. See, much of the character's powerful skills are only possible if the player can draw Magic-type Sainome Cards and then find a balance between attacking with them and stockpiling them for when he gets into his Awakened Form. If played well, however—and with some luck of the draw—this character can win games in just a few turns. But that's also his downfall; because he relies so heavily on the draw, if he gets starved for usable cards or the player doesn't have a firm strategy in mind (as well as a backup strategy if said draw goes poorly), he can simply never find a solid attack-rhythm. Thus, the magus is a sort of "go big or go home" type character that can destroy opponents in record time, or get destroyed himself just as quickly.

Well, that will do it for today, folks! Thanks to everyone who's supported the project and reached out to us through messages and comments. Your excitement for Sainome is absolutely amazing!

Until next time, Sainomers!

Hero Stretch Goal Added, and a Second Chance Opportunity to Back at our Highest Customized Character Tier
over 5 years ago – Thu, Jul 26, 2018 at 12:45:05 AM

Heyo all!

It's been a few days, and we wanted to give everyone an update on what's been happening behind the scenes!

So for starters: Many backers have expressed interest in having another Hero added to the game via a stretch goal, instead of one of the current alternate art goals. So what we have done is kept the $13,000 stretch goal as it is (alternate art for the Sainome Card "Treasure Search") but then replaced the $16,000 stretch goal (which had been alternate art for the Sainome Card "Hypnotism") with adding a Hero stretch goal! So, at $16,000, we will add a new Hero to the game! This change has been reflected on the campaign page. We're really excited about this as we know a lot of you have been asking for a new Hero since we launched the campaign!

Next: Over the weekend, we had a spot open up for our highest pledge tier: the Legendary Hero tier. This tier allows a backer to work with us and the illustrator Mizuki to design your own Hero (both their Normal Form and Awakened Form) and then create his skills. We are only offering two of these, though one is already taken. This tier was snatched up within hours of launching the Kickstarter, but since someone backed out, their loss is your gain! So, if you ever wanted to back at this level, to become immortalized in Sainome with your very own character, complete with a holographic foil Awakened Form, snatch up the remaining slot today! It likely won't last long!

Also: We have just under a week and a half to go. We need your support and voice more than ever. Post, share, retweet about Sainome so that we can unlock those stretch goals! Or, if you're really invested in Sainome, consider backing at a higher tier; we've still got spots for working with our chibi illustrator Noito to create your own Sainome Card!

Lastly: We'll be posting our next Character Spotlight entry in the coming days, so be on the lookout for that!

That will do it for today's update. Until next time, Sainomers!

Best regards,

Bradly & the LionWing Team

New Stretch Goal Revealed!
almost 6 years ago – Tue, Jul 17, 2018 at 12:58:42 AM

Salutations Sainomers!

We're back with an update today, and it's to announce another new stretch goal! This new goal is similar to our last one in that we've got more alternate art lined up for you all. This time, we chose the Sainome Card “Hypnotism” as the one to receive the alternate-art treatment, as it's one of our favorite Sainome Cards in the game! Below you'll see the card's standard art (note: the card below is not the alternate art).

Hypnotism: A Skill-type Sainome Card

We're super excited about this goal, but in order to get there, we need to keep the momentum going! So, please continue telling your friends about Sainome and spreading the word on social media!

Thanks, and until next time, Sainomers!

Best regards,

Bradly & the LionWing Team
